With flu season upon us in many parts of the world, prevention is your best defense against the fever, chills and cough that the virus can bring on. Try the following:
1. Wash your hands, especially when you're out in public places, with hot water and soap. When you travel, it’s a good idea to carry alcohol towelettes with you.
2. Get a flu shot. This is essential for those over 65 years old, as well as anyone with a weakened immune or respiratory system, nursing home residents, and health care workers who have regular contact with patients. Here's something you may not know: pregnant women whose last two trimesters fall during flu season (generally November to April) might consider getting the shot as well!
3. Take astragalus. This immune-enhancing herb can help to build resistance to both the flu as well as the common cold.
4. Get seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Chronic sleep deprivation can reduce your immune response.
5. Take daily vitamins and antioxidants. Berries, green tea and dark chocolate all provide natural antioxidants and, of course, don't forget to take a daily multivitamin that contains an antioxidant formula.
6. Keep up on your fluid intake. Staying hydrated keeps nasal passages moist, providing better natural defenses against viruses.
